The California Alumni Association is looking for an outstanding Accounting Director who has exceptional accounting and managerial skills. The Accounting Manager is responsible for the Association’s accounting processes, internal controls and reporting. The Accounting Manager manages the entire accounting operation, including a team of four accounting staff members – two Staff Accountants, an Accounts Payable Coordinator, and a Payroll Clerk. The Accounting Manager is also responsible for understanding our strategic priorities and how the Accounting Department partners to provide services and information to the entire organization. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Accounting • Manages accounting and financial systems and records, including general ledger, accruals, monthly close, and account reconciliations • Oversees the maintenance of accounts and records in all areas, including revenues, receivables, expenses, payables, investments and capital expenditures • Establishes and maintains accounting policies and procedures to ensure all financial transactions are executed and documented in accordance with GAAP • Oversees all accounting and statutory requirements • Ensures monthly accruals, recurring, and other journal entries are prepared and posted • Ensures proper preparation of reconciliations of balance sheet accounts • Reviews and verifies accuracy of journal entries and accounting classifications
Audit and tax compliance • Arranges and assists with the annual external audit • Prepare the PBC in conjunction with the CFO • Prepares and files various tax forms, schedules and reports • Prepares and files various informational and compliance reports
Cash Management • Monitors cash levels and recommends transfer to/from investment accounts • Manages relationships with CAA’s bank
Internal Controls • Establishes and maintains internal controls to record accounting transactions, monthly and year-end closes, and to safeguard the company’s assets • Documents accounting procedures and policies. Educates staff of these procedures and policies. • Engages actively in the areas of cost-saving efficiencies, process improvements, internal controls, and compliance
Management and Supervision • Responsible for supervising the Staff Accountants, Accounts Payable Coordinator, and Payroll Clerk • Provide organizational leadership regarding the role of accounting in the organization
Operating Plans and Reports • Assists in the preparation of CAA’s Operating Budget and financial forecasts • Prepares monthly departmental budget reports for CAA’s management team • Prepares income and balance sheet statements, consolidated statements and other financial statements and reports • Responsible for business property statements, and workers compensation insurance forms, as well as accruing the related expense/liability
Accounting System • Design, modify, install and/or maintain general accounting systems and software • Responsible for setting up required worksheets, reports and documents on Excel, Word, Access, and accounting software
Other duties and special projects as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelors degree • Minimum two years’ experience managing accounting operations • Solid technical skills - strong accounting and financial reporting skills • Excellent computer skills in Excel, Word, and Access, and accounting software programs • Demonstrate a clear understanding of GAAP • Track record for leading and developing team members and committed to surrounding him/herself with top performers • Excellent communication, analytical, problem solving, planning and organizational skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Accounting degree, CPA, or MBA with relevant experience • Five years of professional experience with at least three years experience in a management role in accounting such as Managing Accountant, Accounting Manager or Director • Experience using Blackbaud’s Financial Edge accounting software • Not-for-profit and fund accounting experience • Knowledge of accounting rules for nonprofits, and preparation of tax returns
