Who to Root for in Atlanta

Cal students and alumni will uphold the Golden Bears' long and proud Olympic tradition at the '96 Summer Games in Atlanta. Although not all sports have held trials to determine their competitors, here's a partial list of Blues you may be cheering for this July:

Baseball: The U.S. team will be pared to 25 players June 16, and could include sophomore pitcher Ryan Drese.

Basketball: Thirty-two-year-old Charlotte Lusschen '88, a 6'8" center who started all four years for the Golden Bears, will attempt an unprecedented comeback at the June tryouts for the U.S. women's team.

Crew: Fred Honebein '91 qualified in the men's eight and intends to compete despite recently undergoing an emergency appendectomy. Laurel Von Bering Korholz '93 will row for the U.S. in the women's eight, which won a gold medal at the 1995 Worlds. Freshman Djordge Visaeki is a contender for the Yugoslav team in June.

Soccer: Former Bears Mary Harvey '87, Joy Biefeld Fawcett '92, and Brandi Chastain all have a chance at making the U.S. women's soccer team.

Softball: All-American pitcher Michele Granger '93 and catcher Gillian Boxx '95 will play on the virtually unbeatable U.S. team, which has lost only one game in the last decade.

Swimming: Mark Henderson '91 (100m fly) is the only Cal qualifier on the U.S. team, but the contingent of foreign swimmers competing for their native countries includes Akiko Thompson (Philippines) and may add Anna Simcic (New Zealand), George-John Tsianos (Greece), Gordan Kozulj and Dominik Galic (Croatia), and Marcus Dicke and Fabian Hieronimus (Germany) before the trials are over.

Tennis: Current Cal tennis coach Peter Wright will coach the Irish team.

Track and Field: Watch for Sheila Hudson '90, the nation's best triple jumper and practically a shoo-in to make the team when the U.S. trials are held in June. Chris Huffins x93 (decathlon), Cal senior Richie Boulet (distance), Lee Adkins x95 (long jump), and Brent Burns '92 (pole vault) also have a shot at qualifying for the American team. Ramon Jimenez-Gaona '92 is Paraguay's record-holder in the discus and will most likely represent his country, while Lenards Ozonlish could be Latvia's entry in the triple jump and two-time Olympian Atlee Mahorn '95 may run the 200m for Canada.

Water Polo: Cal's dominance at the collegiate level will extend to the Olympics as no fewer than six players--Gavin Arroyo, Troy Barnhart, Kirk Everist, Chris Humbert, Sean Nolan, and Chris Oeding--try to make the 13-man squad that will be named June 19.
Last but not least, send some good vibes to Dave Maggard '62 (former Olympic shotputter, Cal track coach, and Cal athletic director), who is the director of sports for the Summer Games. Maggard is in charge of putting on all the athletic events--from securing the equipment ($35 million worth) and overseeing the construction of event venues to making sure the right numbers light up on the scoreboard. It's a massive undertaking, but Maggard says "we're on schedule. And even if we are daubing paint on at the last minute, I guarantee you won't see it."
