Profile of the Month:

Andrea McDermott '03
Resume

I am interested in networking with individuals who have experience working with:

  • Special Education – Clinical Instruction
  • Reading Specialist
  • Fundraising/Advocacy
My Background:
  • Resource Teacher (student teaching)
  • Reading Clinic Tutor
  • Early Intervention – Instructional Assistant
My Greatest Asset is my work ethic and determination. I thoroughly enjoy a challenge, starting from a grass-roots level. Last year I organized a fundraiser to raise monies for reading scholarships for children with Down Syndrome at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Reading Clinic. I raised over $31,000 which led to the creation of an endowment: The William Hart Spickard Andrea Blake McDermott Team William Endowment. To find out more about my passion for fundraising and advocating for the special-needs community, visit: www.teamwilliam.org.

My Last Position was working as a tutor at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Reading Clinic. I instructed students varying in age and disability status in reading and language development. Research-based strategies were implemented in the areas of phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Progress was monitored weekly via Curriculum-Based-Measurement, and instructional interventions were implemented as needed.

I Work Best when given a challenge.

My Dream Job Would Be instructing special-needs individuals in a clinical environment. My area of interest is reading, but I would also enjoy working with individuals in other areas such as language development (ELL), self-care, and life skills. I would like to continue to serve as an advocate for individuals with special needs.

My Next Step is to find a position which would enable me to work in a one-on-one or small group setting with individuals needing intensive instruction. Preferably, I would like to teach reading but I am also open to assisting with instruction in other areas of development. I would also enjoy continuing fundraising efforts for the special-needs community.

I welcome any suggestions, leads, opportunities, or information that could be helpful in my job search. Feel free to contact me at: andrea.b.mcdermott@vanderbilt.edu

Thank you,

Andrea Blake McDermott
