Brian Shea '84
Political Science
Resume

I am interested in networking with individuals who have experience working with:
  • Not-for-Profits
  • Educational Institutions
  • Publishing
  • Political Organizations
  • News Analysis
  • Performing Arts/Visual Promotions
  • Book Design
  • Graphic Design
  • Museum Graphic Design
  • Editing/Writing
My Background
  • Graphic Artist
  • Printmaker
  • Professional Photographer
  • Writer
  1. I Art-directed a magazine
  2. Was offered a rare apprenticeship to study letterpress book design
  3. Designed an informational database for UCSF’s news department
  4. Assisted and learned from some highly qualified photographers
  5. Designed a typeface that was published in a design annual
  6. Was the recipient of a scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in English Rhetoric
  7. Co-wrote an annual address to the American Bar Association
My Last Position
As the art director of a 4-color 88-page magazine with a print run of 20,000, I coordinated all editorial pieces and advertisements to meet a print schedule; I assembled all graphics and text items and designed the layout; I went to photo shoots, directed the photographer and approved the Polaroids before shooting film. I used several software programs to redraw poorly rendered how-to illustrations from contributors. I worked with a pre-press house to fine-tune color adjustments and pre-flight the publication. I traveled to pressrooms (very busy, noisy, technical, fun locations) and oversaw press checks to obtain optimal magazine quality. I designed the packaging and product placement for a new product line. I was brought on board to re-design the sixteen year-old publication.

How I Found My Last Position
I knew no one and had no networking connections having just moved from the Bay Area to the deep South. I responded to an ad in the newspaper, got an interview and was offered the position.

I Work Best
Either by myself or with bright people who can think strategically and are good communicators.

Looking Back
Having many hats is good for the brain, but not necessarily for the savings account.

My Dream Job Would Be
Letterpress printing in the woods, creating esoteric, tactily rich and visually gorgeous limited edition books...or an editorial cartoonist...Ok, what I really want is the role of the next president on West Wing! Back to reality...

I have found great satisfaction working with educational institutions, non-profits and organizations that have a social purpose. In the Bay Area, this genre of organization runs rampant. With my diverse skill set, I could comfortably fit into and work well among many of them. I am most interested in long-term work relationships where I believe in the mission of my work and that of the organization for whom I am employed.

My Next Step
Having recently moved back to the Bay Area after being away for seven years, I am reintroduced to the high quality of life, and to the high cost of living that accompanies such richness. I aim to disprove talk about a weak job market. Clearly, the printer-in-the-woods vision is a dream.

There are a number of terrific career options here, and I intend to continue to pursue them until I find one that is a complementary fit. If you have any leads, suggestions, opportunities, or information that you feel would be helpful toward that end, I would appreciate hearing from you.

I can be reached at zen4brian@yahoo.com.

Thank you!
