Jeff Martin '08I am interested in networking with individuals who have experience working with: - Anthropology and/or cultural geography
- Issues of environmental and social justice
- International NGOs supporting grassroots struggles around land or resource issues and social justice
- Global research and journalism, especially in the developing world
- Green design
- Concept art for the entertainment industries
My Background: - I am graduating from UC Berkeley in the spring of 2008 with a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies, an interdisciplinary program part of the International and Area Studies Department. This coming year I plan to work on an honors thesis in which I can synthesize some of the knowledge I have gained in my studies, focusing on sustainability and social change in the Americas.
- I have volunteered with a variety of leadership and social justice campaigns and organizations. I helped organize an educational workshop for local high school students as a member of the YWCA’s Racial Justice Program advisory board and was part of the Campus Antiwar Network’s national organizing structure.
- I spent the summer and fall of 2006 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, studying at the University of Belgrano and traveling around the country, gaining experience studying, living and networking in a foreign country.
- I have practiced a variety of arts since a very young age and continue to expand my skills. I have experience in music, theater, and photography, and have done illustration work for the Daily Cal and others.
My Greatest Assets are my intelligence and tenacity. Combined, they give me the ability to complete projects and work with others creatively, seeing complex connections and interactions, synthesizing ideas, and allowing me to provide original solutions to difficult problems. I learn quickly and can gain proficiency in diverse fields and activities, giving me the versatility to thrive in a variety of situations. My Last Position was working for my father at his civil engineering and land surveying firm, gaining experience as an AutoCAD draftsperson. I have also recently worked as a grader for a class at Berkeley, which has helped inspire a desire to someday teach. While working and taking classes, I have managed to continue doing organizing and activism on a variety of social justice issues including immigrants’ rights, antiwar organizing, environmental programs and other political campaigns.
I Work Best when Given free reign to exercise my talents. I like being able to contribute as much as I can to a project, and not be hemmed in by jobs that will not or can not take full advantage of what I have to offer. My Dream Job Would Be a dual-career set-up, with half my time devoted to design and art, and half to academic travel, research, and writing. Someday, a teaching position would be wonderful, but I want to be able to get out into the world for a good amount of time beforehand.
My Next Step is graduate school at a university with a strong program in either anthropology or geography and interdisciplinary possibilities. I plan to go for a Ph.D. in either field, focusing on political ecology, or human-environment relationships, focusing particularly on production forms historically and application to current issues of environmental and social justice in the Americas and globally. At the same time, I want to continue expanding my artistic and design skills, building my portfolio in order to pick up at least part time work, either freelance or with a concept art and design firm. I welcome any suggestions, leads, opportunities, or information that could be helpful in my job search. Feel free to contact me at: ljefe333@gmail.com
