    Lair Master Plan Update
    January 2008

    BEARS BUILDING – January 23, 2008
Lair of the Golden Bear, Pinecrest, California

My name is Steve Hannon. I am very excited to be joining the Lair team as its Construction Project Manager. While snowshoeing through the camps to check on some project details it struck me how lucky I am to be working in this beautiful mountain environment. More importantly though, I am beginning to appreciate the passion that permeates these camps and how the Lair experience has affected so many people. The Lair Master Plan is a beautiful set of concepts, born out of years of camping experience by a tremendous group of people. I look forward to being a part of bringing these concepts into physical form and to watching the spirit of the Lair fill what has been built.

A great deal has been accomplished in the last few years under the watchful eye of Dave Musgrave. He continues to be a valued resource as we move into 2008. Camps Blue and Gold have beautiful new pool and bathhouse facilities and the planning process has been completed for the Recreation Area Upgrades at both camps. Camp Oski has seen the addition of Heads #1 & #2 and a great deal of planning work on the Big Oski Plan. The new Lair Maintenance Facility has provided an excellent center of operations for the crew that keeps the camps humming.

The Lair Master Plan has shown itself to be a living, breathing animal (Bear), one that is constantly evolving based on what has been learned by the team from the process to date and input from campers coming from years of camping experience. Things may seem quiet in the snow blanketed Lair, but the Bear is awake. As we enter 2008 a number of projects are already in the works and ready to spring forth as soon as the weather permits. Forest Service approval has been obtained for work on the Recreation Area Upgrades in Camps Blue and Gold. The summer camping season should see beautifully restored sports courts in those camps. Planning is underway on the addition of accessible restrooms for the Gold Lodge and an access road for the Gold staff parking lot. Planning also continues to decide the final form for the new #3 Heads in Blue and Gold Camps which should be ready in 2009. Details are being flushed out for the Legacy Trail which will add a sense of involvement in the history and environment of the Lair. Work on the trail could begin as early as this spring.

2008 will be a year of absorbing the Lair culture and experience and doing everything possible to incorporate the essential elements of that experience into what we build. I will be hungry for input. Please feel free to contact me with your questions or comments. I am very much looking forward to working with all of you.

Have a great New Year of the Bear!
