Alum receives MacArthur Fellowship
Claire Tomlin is a recipient of the 2006 MacArthur Fellowship. Tomlin was one of 25 “genius award” recipients for her studies of hybrid control systems to address problems in aircraft flight control and collision avoidance. The recognition includes a $500,000 grant awarded over the course of 5 years to continue work on original and creative research that will make an important contribution to the future.
Tomlin is an associate professor at UC Berkeley and has been previously honored by numerous other awards, including MIT Technology Review's Top 100 Innovators in 2003, the Donald P. Eckman Award of the American Automatic Control Council (2003), a NSF Career Award (2000-2003) and the National Academy of Engineering's Frontiers of Engineering Program (2002).
Tomlin received her bachelor's degree at the University of Waterloo, and her master's degree from Imperial College, London in electrical engineering. She completed her Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science at UC Berkeley in 1998.
