Berkeley, California, June 11, 2009—California, the magazine of the California Alumni Association, was honored by the Western Publishing Association with a Maggie Award in the Special Interest/Consumer category. Past winners in the category include Imbibe, Edutopia, and Fit Pregnancy. Referred to as "the Oscars of the magazine industry," the Maggies honor excellence in both print and electronic magazines in the western United States. This is the second Maggie Award California has received. Since 1897, California has served to inform, involve, and inspire readers, connecting them to each other and the University through timely yet contextual writing and art. Its circulation of 95,000 includes alumni from all walks of life as well as leading researchers and California legislators. Founded in 1872, the California Alumni Association (CAA) represents more than 430,000 alumni of the University of California, Berkeley. CAA is a nonprofit corporation, self-funded and independent of the University. Service and support are provided to the University through an array of programs including student scholarships, legislative-advocacy, and the award-winning California magazine.
