The Equity Scholarship provides an incentive for high-caliber African-American, Chicano/Latino, and Native American students to choose UC Berkeley as their undergraduate institution. Competition for these students of color is intense and Berkeley often can’t offer the same financial aid packages as private institutions with large endowments. The Equity Scholarship helps close the financial aid gap between UC Berkeley and private universities.
We need your help to keep UC Berkeley competitive
The Equity Scholarship began in 2008 to assist with Chancellor Birgeneau's initiative to make UC Berkeley a more diverse campus. One goal of the scholarship is to support a scholastic community that more closely reflects the demographics of the State of California.
Our five-year working fundraising goal is to raise a $10 million endowment to ensure continuing support of Equity Scholars. We need your help in making this scholarship an ongoing success.
To increase the number of underrepresented minority students who enroll in UC Berkeley and who will contribute to the greater ethnic and racial diversity of the campus community.
To present a welcoming environment at Cal and the Cal Alumni Association for underrepresented minority students and alumni.
To level the financial playing field with our peer institutions in recruiting and retaining high-caliber underrepresented minority students.
How scholars are selected
There is no formal application process. All underrepresented minority prospective freshmen who apply to UC Berkeley will be considered for the scholarship. Scholars are then selected based upon their UC Berkeley application and meeting the eligibility requirements (see below). In March, selected scholars will be notified that they have been awarded The Equity Scholarship contingent upont their acceptance to and enrollment in UC Berkeley.
In their application to UC Berkeley, applicants must
report and verify gross family income of $40,000 to $99,999
self-identify as African-American/Black, American-Indian/Alaskan, Mexican/Chicano, and/or Spanish-American/Latino
Must be admitted to UC Berkeley for enrollment in the Fall 2010 semester
Submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to UC Berkeley by May 1, 2010 for enrollment in the Fall 2010 semester
1 UC Berkeley has identified African-Americans, Chicano/Latinos, and Native Americans as underrepresented minorities on campus. This differs from the definition of underrepresented minorities given by FAFSA or the federal government, which includes Pacific Islander. The CAA Board of Directors has adopted UC Berkeley's definition of underrepresented minorities for the purpose of this scholarship but recognizes the right to change this definition at their discretion.
The Equity Scholarship is administered solely by the Cal Alumni Association, an independent nonprofit organization, and is therefore not subject to state regulations under Prop. 209. Donations to this fund will not receive University credit.
