Members of the Black Alumni Club established the Mentorship Program as a direct response to the low retention rates of African American undergraduate students at Cal. The Black Alumni Club, encouraged by CAA’s interest in increasing diversity in the Association as well as its interest in easing the transition for new students to CAL, introduced the mentorship program in 1988.
The original founders of the program, Pamela Arbuckle, Gary Kelly, Paulette Arbuckle and Regina Freer, intended the program to deal with issues concerning day-to-day student life issues: academic, personal, and cultural to career planning, development and advising. Alumni came together and formed a pool of volunteers who offered individual guidance and support to students.
Over the years, SAMP has expanded its partnerships with diverse communities; and includes support to CAL graduate students.
