TAAP Experience Testimonies

TAAP Senior Surprise 2007

"Upon arriving at Cal, the vastness of Berkeley was overwhelming. Though there seemed to be a variety of people, it became hard to find one’s place in such an immense campus. However, as part of the Achievement Council I feel really comfortable because it has made Berkeley a smaller place. Bumping into fellow Acers on campus or around town brings a feeling of belonging to something in this great whole that is Berkeley. Friendly faces and fun people make the AC experience truly enjoyable.” __Sandra Espino

“ Being in the AC impacted my life in a positive way. Mostly it has been the fact that I am surrounded by many positive role models who have a lot of qualities that I have, and who share common backgrounds and struggles.” __Anonymous

“I think of the four years that I will be at Cal as an opportunity unlike any other. I feel like it is my duty to get as much out of those four years as possible. This is the major motivation to do as many activities and join as many organizations as I can.” __Manuel Buenrostro

“Being part of the AC made my transition from high school to college much easier. I made new friends and had an advisor. Most importantly, I was supported financially to get an education here” __Felix Wong

“When I was initially accepted into this program, I saw it as no more than a mean of paying for school. What I didn’t know at the time was that TAAP would provide me with a family outside of my own, which would offer me support and love through some of my most challenging time. Overall, the AC has been such a blessing to my life and I would recommend it to anyone.” __Rochelle McFarlin

“If it wasn’t for TAAP I might not be writing this right now. Coming from a low-income family and being the first ever to go to college from both sides of my family places a lot of pressure on me to succeed and finish college. By being able to participate in TAAP I am able to focus on my studies and enjoying my college experience. This friendship and love that I receive when I see fellow TAAP scholars gives me the motivation to continue and stick to those hard classes and difficult times. I think if I have to name the one thing that I appreciate most, it is the great respect that I receive from every member because I have never in my life met a group of people as compassionate and respectful as my fellow TAAP scholars. Thanks to donors, I wish there was a way for me to describe what kind of change you have made in my life. All that I can say is thank you for believing in me and giving me a chance to show what I am capable of achieving.” __Trang Le

Achievement Council Creative Corner

"Prejudices build barriers,
stereotypes reinforce them,
but mutual understanding and tolerance
destroy such and ensure remarkable growth."
__Hakeem Yussuff

The Beauty of Being Me
How nice it is to be Me
To be unique
to be petite
to be all I can be.
Me, represents
Miles of cultural history
Lenths of traditional facts
Lifetimes of women's sufferings.
Yes, Me represents
The Latina beauty
The Hispanic tears
And the shimmering brown that colors my skin
I love to be me
Representing the past, the present, and the future
In my eyes, I am the dream,
The dream that came alive
All within me.
__Sandra Bachez

Achievement Award Cycle
Achievement Award Program,
Is like a circular diagram,
Get from the giver,
Give when you become a giver,
Then the cycle goes on over and over.
Towards an eternal flow of progras,
which promises in the next future to transgress,
Into something like the life cycle of a bryophyte
where meiosis, mitosis and itneraction between
Gametophy and Sporophytes produce a new
zygote, which promises to DEFINITELY, compete the Cycle
__Remi Ajiboye

"Riding on Nasant air on Sunday morning along neverending intersections
...delving into mundane chaos each day
unfolding tears of emptiness
dreaming of having wings
losing an escape from fury
life's peeling like an onion
with each layer provoking stronger
a smell and more tears
...waiting for another Sunday morning."
__Rona Osmani
