The Leadership Award

Frequently Asked Questions

When are scholarship applications due?

They will be due February 20, 2008. The deadline has now passed.

I already applied for the Achievement Award Program. Can I apply for the Leadership Award as well?

Yes you may. You will need to fill out the Leadership Award application which is separate from the TAAP application and can be found at alumni.berkeley.edu/as

Many people will be trying to access the web server so there may be problems. As they arise, we will try to resolve the issues as soon as possible. Our best advice is to not procrastinate and submit the application early. If you still experience problems, please be patient and try again later.

You also have the option of submitting a paper version of the application: Must be received by February 20, 2008. Deadline has now passed

How do I submit my answers in plain-text format?

We require you to submit your answers in a plain-text format that has no additional style elements like bullets, tables, bold type, symbols, etc. For best results, save your document as a plain-text file. To do this:
  1. Open your document
  2. Select 'Save As...' from the 'File' menu.
  3. Select 'Plain Text' in the section 'Save as Type'.
***Consult your software's help menu or manual for more information on saving documents to different file types if necessary
  4. Open the plain-text file.
  5. Verify your plain-text file is readable and does NOT contain any unusual characters. Many times apostrophes and commas are converted to other characters.
  6. Copy and paste the text into the submission field in the online application.

How do I know if my application was received?

When you click 'Submit' you will see a page that says:
Thank you!

Your information has been received.

You will then receive a confirmation email within 72 hours. If you do not receive a confirmation email within 72 hours, please contact the Achievement Award Office immediately.

Transfer Applicants if considered to be a dependent should include their parents' 2007 gross income. This income should be as close a match as possible as to what will be reported on the FAFSA. If you are considered to be independent for financial aid purposes please list only your (and your spouses if applicable) income on the application.

Is this a need-based scholarship?

YES. Although there is no set maximum family income, you must be of "high financial need" to qualify. This will be evaluated based on your FAFSA, essays, biographical information, and participation in outreach programs for low-income students.

What qualifies as an Outreach Program?

In order to be eligible to apply for TAAP, it is required that you are/were a participant in a college preparatory Outreach Program that serves students from under-resourced communities by providing advising and academic enrichment opportunities.

What are the current UC-Sponsored Outreach Programs?

What if the outreach program or college preparation program that I participated in is not considered UC-sponsored?

Please fill out the appropriate information on the application, so we know your outreach program is eligible. The goal of this aspect of the application is to reach students whose traditional high school or community college education must be supplemented with services and/or funding of an outreach program.

What if I did not participate in any outreach or college preparation program?

You are not eligible to apply for the Achievement Award.

Is CSF (California Scholarship Federation) an eligible outreach program?

NO.

Am I supposed to apply without knowing whether I have been admitted to UC Berkeley?

YES. In order for us to can let you know the results of your application before your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) is due we must receive your application prior to you finding out your admission status.

Should I submit letters of recommendation?

Please DO NOT submit letters of recommendation, pictures, or any materials other than those requested in the application. Any materials other than those requested will not be considered, and we cannot return them to you.

What is the maximum number of words per essay question?

There is a 300-word maximum for EACH essay.

When will I know whether or not I have received the Achievement Award?

Freshman finalists will be contacted by mid-April to schedule an in-person or phone interview with UC Berkeley alumni. Interviews will take place throughout the state. Those students who are not able to attend an in-person interview may opt for a phone interview (phone interviews do not diminish the chance that you will be selected as a finalist). 2008 Freshman Achievement Award recipients will be notified by April 25th.

Transfer finalists will be contacted by mid-May to schedule an in-person or phone interview with UC Berkeley alumni. Interviews will take place throughout the state. Those students who are not able to attend an in-person interview may opt for a phone interview (phone interviews do not diminish the chance that you will be selected as a finalist). 2008 Transfer Achievement Award recipients will be notified by May 27th.

Award recipients will receive notification of their awards prior to their respective deadline to submit their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) at UC Berkeley.

Does the Achievement Award renew?

YES. The Achievement Award automatically renews for scholars who have successfully completed all of the scholarship requirements and pending "measurable progress towards graduation as defined by the Office of Financial Aid" and a 2.0 GPA, at up to $6,000 per year for one year for transfers and three years for freshmen.

If I am not chosen as a 2008 recipient can I reapply next year?

Unfortunately, no. We only accept applications from INCOMING freshman and transfer applicants. Current UC Berkeley students are not eligible to apply. However, you are eligible to apply for the Leadership Award, and other Alumni scholarships.

Do I have to attend UC Berkeley in order to receive the Achievement Award scholarship?

YES. You must be admitted to UC Berkeley and accept your admission in order to receive the 2008 Achievement Award.

I am eligible to apply to the University of California under AB 540 guidelines. Am I eligible to apply for the Achievement Award if I do not have a social security number?

Yes. If you meet the AB 540 guidelines and are admitted to the University of California, Berkeley we will consider your application to be eligible.
