The California Alumni Association knows scholarships

Since 1934, the California Alumni Association has been a leader on campus in providing scholarships to meet the changing needs of the University of California, Berkeley. President Robert Gordon Sproul and Association Executive Director Robert Sibley first established the Alumni Scholarship to help the University recruit students to Cal from around the state. This highly-respected scholarship now recognizes and rewards over 1,000 student leaders each year. Thousands of prospective and continuing students apply for this prestigious award every year. A cadre of over 600 alumni interview and select the recipients.

To have gotten this far is an absolute honor, but it isn’t over. I am determined to graduate…so I can make my family proud, so my little brothers and sister can look at me as a role mode, but most importantly so my dreams will become reality.

In 1998, Chancellor Robert Berdahl came to the California Alumni Association to ask for its help in recruiting students to Cal. He was concerned that the University would not be able to continue to attract a diverse pool of students from low-income families. He knew that the demographics of the state were changing rapidly, and that more low-income students were becoming eligible for college. He also knew that many of the highly qualified students were not coming to Cal because there was not sufficient financial aid. In response, the Association created the Achievement Award Program to provide not only the financial aid needed for these highly sought after students, but also the support services designed especially to enhance the students’ success on campus.

Today the Alumni Association works closely with the University’s Office of Financial Aid to provide over $1 million to deserving Cal Bears each year. These students are essential to the vitality of the campus – they are scholars contributing academically, and they are performing countless hours of volunteer work on campus and in the community. They are making a difference now and they will make a difference for all of us in the future.
