Each year, highly qualified students, who have overcome significant obstacles, gain admission to Berkeley but cannot afford to attend. The Achievement Award Program gives these students the opportunity to obtain a Berkeley education through substantial scholarship funding and support services created specifically to encourage their success. TAAP's Mission Statement We are those who people thought could not, would not, and should not make it. We believe in a community of scholars who are passionate about outreach and we realize that our strength as a network relies on our diversity. Our purpose is to provide academic support for individuals with different lifestyles, backgrounds, and aspirations. We are confident and have pride in ourselves that we have the power to make a change in the future. “The Achievement Award Program is so much more than funding for scholarships; it’s a program that brings people together to share and participate in a larger vision.”Congratulations 2007-8 Achievement Award Recipients!   The Wake-Up Call “On my fourteenth birthday, I was awakened by the touch of heavy hands nudging my shoulders. It was 5:30 a.m. My father told me to get dressed — I was going to work with him. For the next eight hours, in an old warehouse in the freezing cold, I was ordered to ‘move this, clean that, carry this over there.’My back hurt; my feet and hands were numb with cold; I was hungry. At the end of eight hours, I felt ancient. My father handed me a twenty dollar bill. “‘Not much, huh?’ he said. ‘Suppose you had to support a wife and four kids on that kind of pay. You have a choice: you can go to school and get a good education, or you can work like this for the rest of your life.
