Established in 1934 and 1999 respectively, the Alumni Scholarship Leadership Award and The Achievement Award Program (TAAP) are two of the most prestigious awards on the Berkeley campus. Each year, hundreds of alumni convene scholarship committees across the nation to identify and award the most outstanding outside-the-classroom student leaders and to continue to support these students during their time at Cal. In 2007, we're started our first international districts in London and Hong Kong!
For more information about the specific scholarship programs, please visit the Leadership Award and the Achievement Award Program homepages. We recommend you familiarize yourself with each of these programs before you decide which you'd like to volunteer for.
What does volunteering involve? Click here for our new 2008 Calendar of Events and for registration information about upcoming events! We are looking for volunteers to become involved with the program on a year-round basis, with as much or little involvement as you would like! We appreciate any time you are able to give. We have a number of programs throughout the year that you can participate in.
New Student Applications Most of our volunteers participate in the new student awards selection process. As a part of the nationwide Alumni Scholarship district network, we will match you up with a team of alumni in your area that will work together to award scholarships to worthy candidates. This will take place in London and Hong Kong as well, starting in 2007. You will review applications from local high school seniors (and TAAP junior transfer applicants), hold in-person interviews with scholarship finalists and select the future leaders of the Cal campus for awards. It's a great way to be the first point of contact for future Cal students and show your love for the University!
Continuing Student Applications The Leadership Award, unlike the Achievement Award, must be renewed by recipients each year. Every summer, continuing Cal students are invited to submit renewal applications as well as to apply for the award for the first time. We need your help to interview these students. Interviews for these students are scheduled during the summer in Northern and Southern California and in Berkeley in early September.
Ongoing Support for Students We also have several programs during the year that are designed to help our students get the most our of their UC Berkeley experience. Examples of these programs include writing "Welcome to Cal" notes to incoming students, "Welcome to the Alumni Family" notes to graduating seniors as well as invitations to serve as mentors and participate on career panels. When you register as an Alumni Scholarship Volunteer, we'll keep you up to date on all these opportunities.
