“What’s Caltography?”
Caltography is a union of the Latin roots California, meaning “most awesome school in all the land,” photo meaning “light,” and graph meaning “written.” Much like photography means “written in light,” Caltography means “the most awesome school in all the land, written in light.” The Caltography photo and artwork contest is an opportunity for Cal students to show school spirit and diversity at Cal in a more non-traditional way.
Student photographers/artists from all experience levels are encouraged to submit works for the opportunity to win cash, prizes, and to show their Cal pride. Pictures can be enormously expressive pieces of art. Take some time to be creative, take risks, and show Cal students, faculty, parents, and alumni how Cal speaks to you.
Student Categories Each photo must be entered into one of the following categories.
- Black-and-white prints
- Color prints
- Computer-enhanced (i.e. Adobe Photoshop) photographs*
*Must include stock photos leading up to final composition
Within each category, photos must be submitted as:
- Best showing of Cal pride and spirit
- Best showing of diversity at Cal
- Best showcase of creativity in utilizing the 2008 Homecoming Theme: Where’s Oski?
Judges will select one all around “best in show” photograph. There will also be a first, second, and third place winner for each category.
Student Eligibility Entrants must be a currently registered student or recognized student organization at UC Berkeley to enter this contest. Students and groups are free to enter up to 10 total photographs in any combination of the categories and divisions.
Student Cost There is no entry fee, although entrants are expected to pay for their own film and developing expenses as well as any basic matting costs (matting described below).
Student Entries: Please fill out the attached entry forms completely for your submissions. One form is the master form for all works, the other is the individual labels. Incomplete information may result in ineligibility for awards. All entries should be individually mounted or matted on a firm supportive backing. Entrants are NOT to write anything on the face of the print or mat. There are no restrictions on the size of the photographs. The entry form should be securely taped to the back of the work (no glue please). If you decide to enter a print into multiple categories, you need to supply the appropriate number of prints needed. We cannot judge one print for multiple categories.
Student Deadline The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 at 5 pm. Please deliver all entries to the front desk of the Alumni House, across from the Zellerbach Playhouse, West of Haas Pavilion. We will begin taking entries starting September 8th, 2008.
Student Prizes A $50 cash award will be given to the “best in show” entry. There will be a first and second place for all three categories. First place will be awarded a $50 cash prize. All winning entries may also be featured in a newspaper or exhibit of our choice.
