Remembering Jane Sather, the Woman behind the Campanile

Jane Krom Sather, who died 100 years ago on Dec. 11, 1911, became one of the early and most significant benefactors of the University of California after she settled on UC, in the words of emeritus university archivist Jim Kantor, as “a dependable trustee for her considerable fortune.” Read the full story here

Earth Island Institute, in collaboration with UC Berkeley and the City of Berkeley, is sponsoring Streets Alive!, a project to turn 60 utility boxes in downtown Berkeley into works of art. The Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund has provided funding to place artistic treatments expressing UC Berkeley’s visions of sustainability on seven utility boxes on the edge of campus.

The Cal Band is unique among major college marching bands in being almost entirely student-run and independent of both the music and athletics departments. That independence has engendered intense pride among band members, who, due to a lack of funding, regularly pay out of pocket to travel to away games. The Cal baseball team was dominant in the Santa Clara super regional this weekend, besting a dangerous Dallas Baptist squad in two straight games, 7-0 and 6-2. Both nights were sold out as Bear fans rallied around the newly restored and suddenly ascendant squad. You’ll recall that this was supposed to be the last season for the Cal baseball team.
