Stem cell scaffolds
Berkeley bioengineer Irina Conboy and Kevin Healy, professor of bioengineering and material sciences & engineering, are developing an injectable nanomaterial gel that could protect implanted stem cells as they help repair or regenerate diseased tissue or organs. The nanomaterial acts like an organic scaffold, providing structural support while preventing rejection as the new cells integrate with existing tissue. Here, red rodent heart cells have been injected with white gel.
