Outstanding Alumni Group of the Year 2012

CAL ALUMNI CLUB OF NEW ENGLAND

Since 1975, the Boston-based Cal Alumni Club of New England has served more than 9,000 Cal alumni in six New England states, building a strong alumni community and supporting UC Berkeley students.

The group was a natural response to the growing number of Berkeley alumni attending graduate school at local universities, says its president, Ben Narodick.

Its successes, he says, are based on the strengths of the Cal community. "Every day we read about an alumnus and his growing start-up in the Boston Globe, or we get a chance to meet a young woman who has just been admitted to attend as an undergraduate, or even just a chance to catch the football team on TV, it's another show of the value of our institution and our ongoing support."

Today, the University of California continues to be one of the largest feeders into New England's law and medical schools as well as its leading businesses, college faculties, newspapers, and research labs. Activities have expanded beyond social activities such as ski trips and apple picking—the group supports its own CAA Leadership Scholarship endowment and fundraisers for The Cal Fund.

"We have always felt that our passion for the University of California could compensate for our geographic separation from our alma mater," Narodick says. "CACNE hopes to build on this award to expand our geographical footprint and become a more cohesive alumni community."
