District Chairs lead and manage local volunteers to support the selection of scholarship recipients

Overview

Volunteer as a District Chair to support the selection of scholarship recipients for The Leadership Award or The Achievement Award Program by leading and managing a scholarship district.

Volunteer Description and Expectations

All responsibilities and duties are to be carried out according to the Program Manager's selections timeline and with the support and resources of the Scholarships Department. Below is an outline of expectations. Each scholarship has district chair responsibilities and support unique to its program.

Qualifications
Must be a Cal alum

Commitment Expected
One selections season (approx. October - June)

Knowledge and Understanding of the Scholarship Program
Includes: Vision & Mission Statement, goals and purpose of award and program, volunteer manual, general facts about the award and program

Marketing and Outreach (October–February)
Coordinate outreach efforts at target schools in the District.

  • Contact guidance counselors to promote the scholarship
  • Attend college fairs and/or school visits
  • Promote the scholarship in school and/or local newspapers
  • Notify school officials of scholarship recipients after selections

Scholarship Events (approx. February–May)
Coordinate applicant interviews.

  • Recruit, organize, and train alumni volunteers
  • Secure a venue/space to conduct scholarship interviews
  • Schedule and oversee scholarship applicant interviews
  • Welcome and congratulate recipients

Report to Program Manager

  • Participate and attend mandatory conference calls, webinars, and training sessions.
  • Submit roster of contact information for all alumni volunteers
  • Submit interview paperwork (scores, notes, etc.)

The Scholarships Department will provide District Chairs with the following:

Scholarships Selections Timeline
Complete with dates and events for the selections process.

District Chair Meetings
Scheduled sessions to interact with your peers, get clarification on duties or responsibilities, and ask for additional resources and/or support.

Marketing and Outreach
Approved text, flyers, and/or other marketing materials for email or printed distribution to schools, with a list of targeted schools in your district.

Scholarship Events
A list of volunteers currently in your district with a list of suggested interview sites
