Eric Mart (B.A. ’70, Anthropology) played trumpet with the Cal Band. He recalls his years at Berkeley as an exciting time. “Due to the political atmosphere at time, my class didn’t have a commencement.”
His concern about UC’s funding crisis drew him to join the CAA board. And the recent graduation of his daughter (Elisabeth Mariko Mart ’11) brought it home in a literal sense.
“I went to school in the days of the California Master Plan for Higher Education,” says Mart, president of California Land Management Services. “Now it’s like we’re betting against the future.”
Mart hasn’t kept up the trumpet. But he has stayed true to Cal—and the Band. He is founder and first president of the Cal Band Alumni Association and put in 25 years as Drum Major of the Cal Alumni Band.
