Amy Shin is a proud Cal alumna with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and immunology. Immediately after graduation, she began her studies for a doctorate degree in pharmacy at the University of Southern California. She then opted for a residency program at UC Irvine’s Medical Center to complete her academic training.
Throughout these formative years, Amy’s own experiences within an immigrant family without healthcare insurance encouraged her to develop a strong intent to improve healthcare access and quality of care for the underserved. Amy wanted to champion access to good care and affordable health insurance, which led her to a career in not-for-profits after a few initial years with a for-profit health plan. She is working diligently toward making a difference as CEO of Health Plan of San Joaquin, a not-for-profit health plan serving the low income populations in the San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties.
One of her passions is to better leverage healthcare technology to foster easier communication between the patient, health care provider, and health plan. Amy believes her clinical background as a Pharm.D. has been instrumental in her leadership and the empathy she has for health plan members, health care providers, and the community she serves.
In between advocating for better a healthcare system, Amy attends every single Cal football home game!
