Custodian & Event Support Assistant

The Cal Alumni Association is seeking a full-time Custodian who also supports events hosted at the Alumni House. Located in the heart of the bustling UC Berkeley campus, the Alumni House is an unexpected oasis of tranquility, and versatile place for to host small and large events - from tailgates to conferences, seminars, and weddings. The Custodian & Event Support Assistant position is responsible for providing custodial and groundskeeping services, providing event catering and technical support, maintaining facilities supply inventory, maintaing order in the multi-purpose storage rooms inside Alumni House, and supporting facility safety by monitoring and addressing safety hazards.


Supervision and Classification:  This position reports to the Senior Director, Alumni House Facilities and Hospitality  and is classified as an at-will, full-time, non-exempt position.

Job Location: Alumni House on the UC Berkeley campus.  

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM, 8 hours per day with 30 min lunch break.

Job Summary: Custodial duties include but are not limited to cleaning restrooms, offices, hallways, lobby, meeting rooms, and performing groundskeeping of outdoor event spaces around Alumni House, as well as rodent and pest control.  Event support responsibilities include but are not limited to preparing food and catering trays, setting-up, cleaning-up, and refreshing the catering buffet during events, and providing technical support assistance to the event client.  Facilities storage responsibilities include maintaining the inventory of facilities supplies, and maintaining order of the storage areas within Alumni House for Facilities and Events, and assisting with storage management for all other departments located in Alumni House.  

  • Daily cleaning of Alumni House including but not limited to bathrooms, offices, hallways, kitchen, meeting rooms including glass doors, windows, walls, mirrors, dusting (lobby, offices, meeting rooms), vacuuming, mopping, cleaning handrails and drinking fountain, and polishing fixtures.

  • Daily collection of  trash and recycling.

  • Make Coffee each morning.

  • Weekly cleaning of kitchen at SW2440 sattellite office.

  • Shampoo carpets.

  • Routine cleaning and maintenance of patio, slate and outdoor event areas.

  • Groundskeeping duties include but not limited to watering lawn and landscaped areas, weeding, and trimming topiary and flowering plants.  

  • Perform Event setup and clean up; assist Student Event Assistant team with set up, clean up as needed.

  • Provide rental clients with tech support assistance for events scheduled during scheduled work hours.

  • Catering food preparation, including set up, clean up, and food buffet maintenance.

  • Manages storage areas within Alumni House for Facilities and Event Services, and assists with storage management for all other departments and SW 2440 offices.  

  • Maintain inventory of event, kitchen, custodial and copy room supplies, re-stocking as needed.

  • Rodent and pest control.

  • Wash golf cart.

  • Promote facility safety, and monitor and address safety hazards such as spills, leaks, lighting, etc.

  • Other Duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: 
  • At least 1-year custodial/maintenance experience, or demonstrated skills.

  • Previous catering and event support experience.

  • Ability to routinely lift and maneuver 50 lbs or more.

  • Ability to climb and work from ladders up to 15 feet above floor or ground.

  • Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to communicate and work directly with clients to trouble-shoot events and provide catering support

  • Submit to and pass Consumer Report and FBI/DOJ background check investigations.

  • Possess valid CA driver’s license and clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Experience working in an educational environment with a high volume of events and visitor traffic.  

Salary and Benefits: 

The hourly pay rate is between $18-20 per hour and is eligible to participate in company sponsored benefits.
