Senior Director of Media
Berkeley, CA (Hybrid)
The Senior Director of Media is responsible for shaping and elevating how we share stories. Reporting to the Chief Operations & Financial Officer (COFO), this leader will oversee a multidisciplinary team responsible for driving the strategy and business operations behind CAA’s flagship channels – including the California magazine (print and digital), The Edge Podcast, and more. The Senior Director will lead the efforts to drive meaningful discussion and engagement across UC Berkeley’s alum community.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute a unified content strategy and consistent voice that informs, inspires, and strengthens Cal alum’s pride and engagement with Cal. Build and manage a network of content sources and contributors, integrating audience feedback in a spirit of continuous improvement to meet the Cal community’s needs.
- Collaborate with California magazine’s editor-in-chief and serve as the connector to internal CAA departments.
- Serve as the primary liaison between CAA leadership and Board for matters related to budget, distribution, content engagement and other related topics.
- Act as bridge between CAA and external campus partners.
Team Management & Collaboration
- Lead a multidisciplinary team that includes content management, production, and student fellows, with indirect oversight of the California magazine operations.
- Establish and facilitate regular story and content planning meetings across departments.
- Provide strategic input to the Editor-in-Chief of California magazine while supporting cross-channel content development.
- Foster collaboration with UC Berkeley campus partners.
Execution & Optimization
- Oversee the redesign of California magazine’s print and in collaboration with the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief.
- Develop and launch new content formats (e.g., audio features, alum opinion columns, scholar spotlights).
- Expand and enhance the California Live event series, including an improved marketing strategy.
- Design and implement engagement campaigns that drive traffic, ticket sales, and alum participation.
- Measure and report on content performance, reach, and ROI to inform strategy and demonstrate impact.
Planning & Growth
- Create a streamlined cross-functional briefing and review system.
- Assess workflows and propose improvements in content development.
- Launch the Student Fellows Program to cultivate emerging communications talent.
- Develop a roadmap for visual storytelling expansion, digital modernization, and long-term content innovation.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in content strategy, preferably in nonprofit, higher education, or media.
- Proven editorial and communications leadership in nonprofit, higher education, or media expertise leading multi-platform storytelling.
- Experience with audience development, editorial planning, and cross-channel engagement.
- Strong project management skills with a track record of leading high performing teams
- Exceptional writing, editing, and creative direction abilities.
- Familiarity with alum relations and higher education.
Salary and Benefits
This position is classified as an at-will, full-time, exempt position. Pay range will be between $130,000-$170,000 annualized, depending on experience. The role is eligible to participate in company-sponsored benefits, our 403(b) plan with a company match, and generous paid time off.
