Run for California 5k Run/Walk, thru Oct 4

Are you ready to rock your Cal spirit and Run for California?
Last year, more than 700 Cal alumni, students, and friends around the world participated in the virtual Berkelium 5K Run/Walk.

This year, the Cal Alumni Association (CAA) is partnering with Cal Athletics to bring you Run for California, powered by Weatherford BMW. Run or walk the 5K at your own pace, anywhere in the world, on or before October 3.

We encourage family and friends to register as well! To ensure you receive your t-shirt by October 3, sign up by September 20.

CAA and Cal Athletics continue to prioritize the health and safety of our Cal community. Although we cannot physically come together for this event, the Cal spirit will live on—because we are together even when we are apart.

Winners of the “Most Cal-Spirited Run” photo contest will receive a $100 gift card from Sports Basement. Winner of the “Beary-est Family/Household” contest will receive a prize from Weatherford BMW and Visit Berkeley.

Sep. 18 – Cal Football Viewing Party

Cal Football is back! We return to our home for over a decade for for our weekly Cal Football Viewing Parties. This will be our first event after stopping in-person events during the pandemic. As usual, attendees will have to order their own food and drink and follow all CAA and local health department protocols. This is a recurring event and happens each with Cal Football has a game, beginning with the season-opening on Sept. 4 vs Nevada and ending on Nov. 27th vs UCLA.

Join your fellow UC Berkeley Alumni in another virtual baking event. We will be baking pumpkin cinnamon cookies together!

Monica (Motor City Bears - Cal Alumni SE Michigan) will be leading another virtual baking event. The chosen recipe is a Pumpkin Cinnamon Cookie recipe in honor of Fall and everything Pumpkin Spice. Zoom link will be e-mailed to registered attendees prior to the start of the event. Note that the 1PM start time is EST.

Sep. 21 – Cal Alumni Night at the Red Sox

Well, here is a small step towards normalcy. CACNE and the old blues committee are sponsoring the 2021 Cal alumni night at the Red Sox on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 against the NY Mets!

We have reserved a bloc of 30 seats in the infield grandstand (section 16). The game begins at 7 PM on Sept. 21, 2021.The cost per ticket is $65 per person. The only requirement to purchase a ticket is that one person must be a Cal Alumni or parent. You can purchase up to 2 tickets. While Fenway is open to full capacity now and hopefully forever, the Red Sox will refund the ticket costs, if that situation changes.

Our chapter is also requiring that participants sign a COVID release and liability waiver which will be provided after registration.

Featuring Michael Pham ’16 and Robert Sproul ’70, Beyond Mentorship is the story of two unlikely friends whose lives converged through the Cal Alumni Association. Their support of one another inspired them to be advocates in their communities, and through their shared passions, Bob and Michael developed a friendship that transcends that which is familiar. In true Cal spirit, Michael and Robert each celebrate the other’s unique talents and resilience, encouraging viewers to embrace friendship and to continue knocking down perceived barriers.

The Alumni Making a Difference series explores how alumni and members of the Cal community rely on friendship, mentorship, and faith to overcome great challenges. Together, we can draw meaning from our past and use our experiences to impact the future.

Referencing on “The June 19th Dialogues: Stories & Histories from the Black & Asian Communities” initiated by the Berkeley Chinese Alumni International Association and Cal Armed Forces Alumni Association, we invite other leaders of the Berkeley community to discuss experiences on our shared struggles and how we can all work together to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Oct. 1 – How do you feel? Molecular Mechanisms of Itch, Touch, and Pain

Acute pain acts as a warning signal that alerts us to noxious stimuli in our environment that are potentially tissue damaging. Likewise, itch sensations trigger reflexes that protect us from diseases that insects may be carrying. Despite these essential protective functions, itch and pain can outlast their usefulness and become chronic debilitating conditions that affect millions of people worldwide. Dr. Bautista will summarize what is known about the biology of itch, touch, and pain then focus on her latest research identifying novel mechanisms that drive chronic itch, chronic pain, and inflammatory disease.
