Jul. 25 – [Monterey / Salinas] Summer Welcome Party 2020

3 min 20 sec ago
This party is a great way for new Cal students and their families to connect with others in the Monterey County area. The Alumni Club has arranged guest speakers -- both past and current students -- who can help answer questions about starting your time at Cal in the Fall.

We invite families to attend as well so we can answer their questions and welcome all of you into the Cal community here in Monterey County.

Normally, this would be an in-person event with lunch and some breakout sessions including a very popular student "huddle" where new students can ask current students any questions away from their families. This year we will host the party on Zoom and do our best to replicate the "huddle" with a Zoom break-out room.

The Alumni Club knows heading off to college (or sending a child to college) is difficult under the best of circumstances. The Covid pandemic and prospects for a semester in the cloud won't make this any easier.

We hope to give everyone the best welcome we can and offer our support during the coming months.

Sep. 15 – Making Black Lives Matter In and Out of the Classroom

3 min 20 sec ago
Teachers returning to work this Fall face ongoing public health concerns, new instructional challenges and a heightened awareness of the way institutionalized racism continues to infect American institutions. Controversial social distance policies, energized protest and a presidential election are sure to factor into this historical moment and shape how students approach both their physical and virtual classrooms. This workshop, facilitated by veteran educator and activist Zakiya Sankara-Jabar, examines the emerging context for teachers and addresses how educators can and must support Black students and families urgently demanding safety, justice, dignity and educational opportunity.
