The Cal Alumni Association has named its 2011 Alumnus of the Year: Secretary of Energy Steven Chu will be awarded the association’s highest honor in recognition of his scientific contributions, his commitment to addressing the problem of climate change, and his leadership in energy research and policy.
A Nobel-winning physicist, UC Berkeley professor, and former director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Chu received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1976. As United States Secretary of Energy, Dr. Chu is charged with implementing President Obama’s ambitious agenda to invest in clean energy, reduce our reliance on foreign oil, address the global climate crisis, and create millions of new jobs. In receiving this latest honor, he joins a long list of distinguished Berkeley alumni, including last year’s recipient, the philanthropist Richard Goldman ’41, who passed away last month.
Dr. Chu and other distinguished alumni award recipients will be honored at Charter Gala, a benefit for the Cal Alumni Association, on April 9, 2011 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at San Francisco City Hall.
