Farewell from the Executive Director

Dear Fellow Cal Alumni and Friends,

It has been an honor and a joy to serve at the helm of our Cal Alumni Association (CAA) these past four years, so it is with mixed emotions that I announce my departure from CAA this fall. I have decided to return to the private sector to pursue an exciting leadership opportunity in the marketing industry.

Director’s Chair: Summer 2015

Nothing better represents the promise of the future than the inherent optimism of graduation season. Here at Berkeley, we just welcomed more than 10,200 new Cal graduates. These bright young people come from all over California, the nation, and the world. These Golden Bears enter a new chapter in life with a profound commitment to community service, environmental awareness, social entrepreneurship, educational equity, and a passion for innovation. Today’s Berkeley graduates represent the best aspects of a 21st century multicultural society.

Cal’s very own superheroes: UC Berkeley bioengineers, Cal alum Kyle Kurpinski, Ph.D. ’08 and Terry Johnson, hosted the panel “Science in Science Fiction” at a sold-out WonderCon 2015 this past weekend, in which they discussed the discoveries and innovations that inspire science fiction, and the way that science and engineering are depicted in popular media. Go Bears!

CAA at UC Day 2017

On March 8, CAA and a delegation of alumni will join the campus government relations team to meet with lawmakers in Sacramento to talk about the transformative power of a college education and how UC benefits the state. The CAA delegation will join groups from the other nine UC campuses, and UC President Janet Napolitano, to advocate for public higher education funding. The team will meet one-on-one with nine legislators to remind them about the importance of supporting UC, especially during the current period of enrollment growth.

Supporting Students at Cal

As Executive Director of Berkeley’s Cal Alumni Association, one of the most rewarding aspects of my job has nothing to do with alumni at all. “Blasphemy,” you say? Not at all! That most rewarding aspect has everything to do with the future of our University and the future of our alumni community—it’s current Cal students.

The Power and Value of “The Brand”

These days you hear a lot of people talking about the power and value of “the brand.”

As a 20-year veteran of the advertising industry, I’m well acquainted with brand strategy and the critical role a well-managed brand can play in building positive awareness, preference, and advocacy among customers, constituents, and ambassadors. Here at Cal, we pay a great deal of attention to the ways in which our very unique University brand is conveyed and how our story is told.
