On a clear September evening, Alumni House became more than just a gathering place; it became a crossroads of legacy and pride as the Cal Alumni Association hosted Golden Bears Welcome TSU Tigers. What began as a pre-game reception grew into an evening defined by storytelling, shared values, and the energy of two universities whose traditions continue to shape future generations.
A Celebration Beyond Rivalry
The event welcomed Texas Southern University alums, students, and friends to Berkeley, honoring TSU’s proud HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) heritage and highlighting Berkeley’s own longstanding tradition of public mission and access. The room brimmed with anticipation, not only for the next day’s kickoff, but for the chance to connect across communities. Guests mingled over light refreshments, laughter spilling out into Alumni House’s courtyard as conversations turned from football predictions to stories of campus life, mentorship, and leadership.
It felt less like a rivalry reception and more like a family reunion, where commitment to excellence and resilience created bridges from Houston to Berkeley, from Tiger stripes to Bear spirit.

Leadership at the Forefront
At the heart of the evening was a special conversation between UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons ’82 and TSU President J. W. Crawford III. Their dialogue underscored a shared mission: that higher education must expand opportunity and prepare students to lead in a complex, diverse world.
Chancellor Lyons spoke of the parallels between Berkeley and HBCUs, noting how both are dedicated to delivering education at scale while advancing equity and fairness across society. His reflections carried the weight of stewardship, recalling moments on campus that reminded him of the profound responsibility of leading an institution built over many generations. Lyons also underscored the importance of collaborative problem-solving in higher education:
Put your if conditions on the table. What do you think is hard? Why shouldn’t we do this? I wanna hear your opposition. And then we’re going to bring our creativity to mitigating or eliminating those if conditions. And we’re going to land at yes. We’re not going to land at no.”
President Crawford emphasized the importance of leadership rooted in community, resilience, and a commitment to opening doors for future students. Together, their words framed the evening as not just about football, but about the enduring role of universities in shaping lives.

Stories that Resonated
The reception came alive with voices from both Cal and TSU. TSU alum Biannka Walker described the night as “inspirational,” likening it to a family gathering where the conversation was less about rivalry and more about celebrating the legacy of HBCUs, “colleges for us, by us, but open to all.”
Cal alum Nnenna Ibeanusi reflected on her time at Berkeley, recalling long afternoons in the library and the joy of game days at Memorial Stadium. For her, the night represented the importance of standing together with HBCU alums, honoring history while forging new connections.
For TSU student LeDrico McCullough, the trip marked his first time in California, an opportunity that blended school pride with discovery. Between touring Cal’s campus and visiting companies like Apple and Google, he and fellow TSU student leaders found themselves inspired to think beyond the game toward possibilities for their futures.

Pride, Excellence, and Unity
As the evening drew to a close, conversation turned naturally toward the excitement of game day, the Ocean of Soul marching band from TSU, the fireworks at Memorial Stadium, the spectacle of college football in full force. Yet the true highlight of the evening was already clear: the connection forged between two institutions united by values of pride, excellence, and community.
In bringing together Berkeley’s Golden Bears and Texas Southern’s Tigers, the event demonstrated that beyond the competition lies something more enduring: the chance to celebrate legacy, honor tradition, and create lasting bonds across campuses and communities.

This was not just a reception. It was a reminder that universities, at their best, are more than the sum of their histories, they are living communities that expand when we open doors to one another.
