We are proud to spotlight Joanne Brown, ‘68, MSW ‘70, JD ‘73, whose commitment to the Alumni Scholars Program reflects the spirit of the Cal Alumni Association’s community.

As a first-generation student from rural Monterey County, Joanne Brown’s journey at Cal was shaped by scholarship support and a passion for justice. A proud recipient of The Leadership Award scholarship, Joanne credits Cal with inspiring her and opening the doors to a lifelong career in public service. Reflecting on her arrival at Cal she says, “Once I walked onto the Cal campus and saw the groups advocating for social change and the passion of the students, I was hooked.”

During my career, I have been a public defender, a judicial officer (judge), general counsel for a state agency, and a national consultant in child welfare and policy. In all those roles, my Cal education has been a reference point.”

Joanne attended Cal in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, when the Free Speech Movement, Anti-Vietnam War protests, and civil rights demonstrations took place on campus daily. Joanne writes that these experiences were essential components of her academic  and moral education, which she still carries with her today, “During my career, I have been a public defender, a judicial officer (judge), general counsel for a state agency, and a national consultant in child welfare and policy. In all those roles, my Cal education has been a reference point.”

Through her continued giving, Joanne champions the values that inspired her at Berkeley, creating a powerful legacy of impact for generations to come. “That these awards emphasize community service, ambition, and leadership is important to me,” she says. “The Leadership Award Program and The Achievement Award Program  are focused funds that can provide financial assistance at a critical time in a young person’s life, leading them to a life-changing education. These are the young people who most need your attention and commitment. Even a modest donation can really make a difference, in today’s world.”
