Celebrating 150 Years of Cal Spirit
The Cal Alumni Association invites you to join our vibrant alumni community in celebrating its 150th anniversary.
A Message from Executive Director Susie Cohen Crumpler
Spring heralded a vibrant return to Berkeley. The Class of 2022 held commencement in person, a milestone after two long pandemic years. Elsewhere, a new class is accepted, and its prospective admits visit campus with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The decision they make next could be pivotal for their future. Perhaps there is a similar moment in your memory.
This year also marks the 150th anniversary of our alumni association. In 1872, members of the University of California’s charter Class of 1873 gathered to establish this alumni community. This simple act ensured that all graduating students of this great university would always have a connection to Berkeley.
Now, a century and a half later, alumni continue this legacy at events on campus and around the globe.
150 Years of Community
The first graduates of the university created the alumni association in 1872—one year before their own graduation—to ensure that future students would never be without community after Cal. We continue that legacy today by creating spaces for Cal graduates to connect together.

150 Years of Change
CAA’s Alumni Scholars Program has helped change the narrative for bright students who face barriers to accessing higher education since 1934. The program provides financial and program support for nearly 900 students each year—many of whom are first-generation college students and from underrepresented groups at Berkeley.
