The University of California Marching Band—“The Pride of California”—comes striding through Sather Gate led by drum major Shay Tudhope ’25. In a game-day tradition known as “March Up,” the band wends its way across campus from Sproul Plaza, through the Gate, past the Campanile, on its way to enter Memorial Stadium.
Band members are a fiercely loyal lot. Every year, on Alumni Band Day, Cal Band alums join current members in force—more than 200 strong—to spell out not just Script Cal, but Script “California” (aka “Script-ifornia”) before adoring Golden Bears fans.
