Acrostics from a Cross Scientist: Kammen Has a Message for Trump

Daniel Kammen, UC Berkeley professor of Energy and Director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Lab, has publicly resigned his role as State Department science envoy. The U.S. Science Envoy Program, an outreach initiative started by the Obama administration, sends top scientists abroad to promote the country’s commitment to science and technology as tools for diplomacy; envoys typically serve for one year. Ever the overachiever (Go Bears!), Kammen embelished his resignation letter on Wednesday with an acrostic message. See if you can spot it in his letter below.

This isn’t the first time Professor Kammen has been critical of the administration. In June, Kammen, who is said to be in discussions with Jerry Brown about starting a climate change research institute, talked to CALIFORNIA about the administration’s resistance to climate action.

“He’s been steadily chipping away [at greenhouse gas emission standards], so walking away from Paris doesn’t mean much in terms of impacts,” Kammen says. “In any case, the signatories aren’t going to meet their targets [keeping global temperature rises to “well below” two degrees Celsius above pre-Industrial Revolution numbers, with a goal of no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius]. What withdrawal does establish is that the U.S. is no longer a major player in climate change response and policy, and that will affect where the investments go. China has just invested [more than] $300 billion in clean energy. Ultimately, that’s going to translate to about a trillion dollars in lost job opportunities for the United States.”

Stupid Move! Remove yourself from a role where you could possible influence positive changes. Now you have left a vacuum. Cowardly or simply afraid to stand up for what you believe.
Concentrate your nuclear engineering abilities to keep us safe from North Korean and Islamofascist nuclear terrorism not on delusional false news about Trump and false claims of racism, sexism, and exaggerations about climate change. Support freedom of speech in Berkeley.
Dan, you must admit failure another mode has been the fact that we have failed to come up with implementable solutions for far too many decades so now we have Trump to deal with and he doesn’t give a damn about the long-term future of the human race as long as he can maximize his wealth and power today. For over a decade I have studied solutions to our problems such as those documented in John Brockman’s 2007 Edge Annual Question “WHAT ARE YOU OPTIMISTIC ABOUT?” by 160 “high-powered scientific thinkers.” https://www.edge.org/annual-question/what-are-you-optimistic-about In spite of all the world class wisdom in the Edge publication, Trump’s presidency has already proven that we are not making any progress to protect the future of the human race even though we have produced “ever deepening knowledge and ever more efficient and powerful tools and techniques“ since the book was published in 2007. Both the UN IPCC and Congress in Washington have proven to be far too politicized, controlled by the power of money, to make the right things happen. What does it take for you scholars to inform, educate and motivate us to demand action before time runs out due to out of control global warming, worldwide violence and inequalities!?
