Matej Silecky ’15

July 1, 2022

Matej Silecky is the Director of a documentary about Ukrainian history that began airing on PBS stations nationwide in April 2022, timing that coincided with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The film, Baba Babee Skazala, tells the little-known story of Ukrainian children torn from their homes in the crush between the Nazi and Soviet fronts in World War II. The parallels of their experiences to those in Ukraine today is chilling.

The production team worked with NETA, the National Education Television Association, to create a free curriculum and learning media resource to accompany the film. The resource is geared to secondary school students and is available on PBS Learning Media. (pbslearningmedia.org)

In another Berkeley connection, Matej also worked with Karen Everett, Story Editor on the film and TV edit. Karen taught for 18 years at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
