Alan White

Alan White ’69 writes: “Berkeley in the late 1960s was full of local and international concerns between the war in Vietnam and the many social issues one learns about at UC. Half way through a MBA program in 1970, I decided Peace Corps would be a better option so by 1971 I was learning Spanish and went to Ecuador with an assignment in the Galapagos Islands working with the Charles Darwin Foundation. After a few years in Ecuador I gravitated to a career in natural resource conservation that took me into research in sustainable marine resource use and more than 40 years of work in Southeast Asia in various projects for coral reef protection, fisheries management and the initiation of the Coral Triangle Initiative. I married a lovely woman from the Philippines who is a wonderful partner in all of our marine and travel adventures. Residing now in in Hawaii allows us to make frequent visits to the Philippines to support various projects and visit friends and family. Berkeley was the catalyst that opened my eyes to the world!”
