Lynn O. “Pappy” Waldorf, now commemorated in bronze on the western edge of Faculty Glade, is a bona fide legend in college football, a coach in the pantheon with the Knut Rocknes and Pop Warners and Andy Smiths. In ten seasons at Cal (1947–1956), Waldorf notched a record of 67-32-4 and made three consecutive trips to the Rose Bowl. But even giants can be laid low and Waldorf’s final seasons were anything but spectacular. Read “Swan Song” in our latest issue, an article excerpted from Ron Fimrite’s Golden Bears.

Fimrite, a Daily Cal alum and long-time writer for Sports Illustrated, died last May at the age of 79. Golden Bears was his final book.
