Jane Clare Upp

Jane Clare Upp ’94 writes: “We wore bobby socks and saddle shoes. We were career determined when we joined Dean Griffin’s Journalism class in 1946. We, Joan from Piedmont and me from Bakersfield were alone in a class of males, which Dean Griffin preferred (not us). Joan wanted to be a reporter and I wanted to be a Foreign Correspondent. She succeeded and was also on TV. I remember only two of the men in that class as they became friends: Herb Fowler and Bill Apperson. Bill was also a photographer and worked with me on an story I was writing for Mademoiselle Magazine since I was on their College Board. The article was about the Horse Show at the Cow Palace. (It did not make their deadline.)

Joan realized her dream but my plans went out the window when I started dating a Phil Delt, John Upp ’49 in 1949. Love overcame career.

We had 65 married years together and though I was no Foreign Correspondent , I had my BA in Journalism and while having five children over a span of 18 years, I got my teaching credential, an MA in Education and owned Travelwise, a travel Agency in Walnut Creek, which got me around the world taking many groups to China starting in 1978 and else where in the world. I stayed a travel agent for 29 years.

From those experiences I wrote many travel articles and in my last twenty or so years interviewed many people for Home Organs.
Now it is time for a permanent sabbatical.”
