UC Comment on Thakur v. Trump

2026 Summer

“As a public university, the University of California has a fundamental responsibility to support its students, faculty, and staff, serve the state and its taxpayers, and work constructively with federal and state partners.

UC is engaged in a multi-front effort to challenge the administration’s cuts to critical research funding that drives medical innovation, employs thousands of Californians, and improves lives across the country. Through advocacy in Washington, D.C. and Sacramento, successful legal challenges, our co-sponsorship of the SB 895 $12 billion research bond, and expanded efforts to educate the public about the importance of federal research funding, the University is using every available tool to protect its mission. Our community has also played a key role in protecting UC, including faculty who helped restore more than $500 million in critical research funding to the University.

Across the UC system, there is a broad commitment to this work. President Milliken has made clear that UC will continue to engage in good faith with the federal government but will never compromise its core values, independence, or academic freedom.”
