Director’s Chair Winter 2019: In a Sea of Red, Blue and Gold Rise Up
Earlier this fall, I traveled to Mississippi to support our Cal football team members, some of whom are from the South, at their game against Ole Miss.

Reflections on an epoch-making year for diversity and student excellence
As a UC Berkeley alumna, I find it more critical than ever to uplift today’s students. I remember sitting among new graduates, their families and friends, and Cal faculty and staff in the cold wind and pouring rain at UC Berkeley’s commencement celebration in May. It wasn’t just the weather that made the moment stick in my mind; it was also listening to Tiffany Moore ’19 sing “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” from The Sound of Music as it stormed.
We’re getting older—and that’s great news! This year, the Cal Alumni Association’s Alumni Scholars Program celebrates 85 years of support for the best and brightest in the Cal community.
In late April, I had the privilege of traveling to Sacramento to discuss the inclusion of higher education in California’s state budget. I joined UC Berkeley leaders like Chancellor Carol Christ and UC Regent Jason Morimoto ’02 to meet with those working on the budget to advocate on behalf of students and their needs.
I have so much to be grateful for as we prepare to enter a new school year. I am still thrilled by the opportunity to serve as executive director of the Cal Alumni Association (CAA)—an opportunity made possible by the exceptional education I received at Cal. Each day, I collaborate with an amazing community of […]
Each fall, we greet incoming students and welcome alumni returning to campus, but this season is different.
UC Berkeley turned 150 years old on Charter Day, March 23, 2018. Alumni from the Classes of 1947 through 2017, plus family, friends, and current students, came to campus to show love for our university and celebrate our diverse, global legacy.
“It is a disturbing fact to me,” joked President John F. Kennedy in his 1962 Charter Day speech, “that the New Frontier owes as much to Berkeley, as it does to Harvard University.” Happy Birthday, Golden Bears! 2018 is an exciting year, marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of Berkeley—the shining star of public education. How […]
As the UC's first campus, Berkeley stands not only as a testament to our academic excellence and research innovation—it proves the university's 150-year legacy of dismantling barriers to inclusion.
At the year’s end, I find it encouraging to look back on the work the Cal Alumni Association (CAA) and UC Berkeley have accomplished. In 2017, Berkeley remained steadfast in its mission to unify its diverse communities by creating a culture of peace and respect for the dignity of human life at a time when […]
Dear Alumni and Friends, It’s the season of giving, when our thoughts turn to all the ways in which we are blessed, and the many ways in which we can, and do, make a difference in the lives of others. As the holidays approach and we enter this season of sharing, I am inspired by how […]
