Changes to California Magazine’s Print Distribution

March 1, 2023

Dear California subscriber,

I’m writing to inform you about a change coming to the magazine. In 2023, the magazine will appear in print twice per year instead of quarterly. The Spring/Summer issue will mail in June and the Fall/Winter edition will arrive in mailboxes in December. Both issues will be slightly larger in page count. In between print issues, we’ll also be publishing more content online and updating our website, californiamag.org, more frequently.

This change is the result of many factors. As lingering supply chain issues continue to fuel inflation, the cost of raw materials including ink and paper have increased considerably. On top of that, postage increases have hit periodicals especially hard, and more sizable rate increases are expected in the near future.

But cost isn’t the only factor. Another important consideration is environmental; reducing our frequency will help conserve natural resources and reduce our carbon footprint. Ultimately, that makes it the right thing to do.

Going forward, we promise to keep bringing you award-winning journalism about the world of Berkeley, and Berkeley in the world on all our channels, including our podcast, website, social media, newsletters, and the semi-annual print editions.

Thank you for reading. I welcome your feedback at californiamag@alumni.berkeley.edu
