Clothilde “Cloey” Hewlett ’76, J.D. ’79

Cal Alumni Association (CAA) Executive Director Clothilde “Cloey” Hewlett received her B.A. in political science from UC Berkeley in 1976 and her J.D. from the UC Berkeley School of Law in 1979. Cloey was a partner in the national law firm Nossaman LLP and prior to that was a partner in the global law firm K&L Gates LLP. As a partner, she focused on government contracting, crisis management, major appropriations, policy analysis, and diversity. She is a specialist in public policy, was a registered state and federal lobbyist, and has served under three different governors of California. She has served as Interim Director of the State of California’s Department of General Services, Undersecretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency for the State of California, Director for Moral Character Determinations for the State Bar of California, and Special Prosecutions Investigator and Assistant District Attorney for the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

Cloey has demonstrated a strong commitment to the community and received numerous professional honors, including the 2018 California Law Review Alumni of the Year Award, University of California, Berkeley School of Law, and the 2014 Silver SPUR Award for Lifetime Civic Achievement. She was named to The Recorder’s 2012 list of the “Women Leaders in Law,” inducted into the 2010 “Forever Influential Honor Roll” by the San Francisco Business Times, and received the 2008 League of Women Voters “Women Who Could Be President” award. She is a recognized national diversity leader in her professional and personal endeavors. In 2013, Cloey was honored as one of the “Most Powerful and Influential Women of California” by the National Diversity Council, received the Wiley Manuel Law Foundation “Legal Pioneer” award in 2006, received the “Women Leading Change” award in 2005 from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, and in 2000 received the “Outstanding Achievement” award from the Black Women Lawyers Association of Northern California and the Latino Journal’s “Excellence in Public Service” award.

She has been outside counsel to sports organizations including the Sacramento Kings and the Santa Clara Stadium Authority, and co-chair of the Sacramento King’s FIRST Community Advisory Council for the Golden1 Entertainment Sports Center. Since 2009, she has been a member of the Board of Directors for the San Francisco 49ers Foundation. She has been active in sports philanthropy and in helping local communities realize the economic benefits of professional sports.

She is actively involved in raising the next generation of UC Berkeley student leaders, especially CAA Alumni Scholars and student athlete leaders. Cloey has been extensively involved with UC Berkeley, serving as a board member for CAA and as a speaker, panel moderator, reunion co-chair for Boalt Hall and honorary reunion chair for her 40th reunion in 2016. She has received numerous campus awards, including CAA’s Excellence in Service Award (2011) and the Adhama Award from Berkeley School of Law’s Journal of African-American Law & Policy (2005).
