Before she became a producer of Hollywood films, Jesse B’Franklin was a fixture in the Bay Area indie film scene working in film distribution and exhibition as well as film festival programming. B’Franklin was hired as executive vice president of acquisitions and distribution at Island Alive in Los Angeles. In this role, she shepherded many films to market including Kiss of the Spider Woman, She’s Gotta Have It, and Mona Lisa. Wanting to get more involved with the creative process, B’Franklin made the move to become an independent producer after reading the then-unknown Billy Bob Thornton’s script for One False Move. The film went on to become a highly-acclaimed arthouse sensation. B’Franklin went on to produce the HBO mini-series Laurel Ave, Devil in a Blue Dress, One True Thing, High Crimes, Out of Time, and Bless Me, Ultima. Over the years, B’Franklin has worked with noted Hollywood luminaries such as Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Jennifer Beals, Meryl Streep, Ashley Judd, and Morgan Freeman. She is currently developing a mini-series based on the Black Panther Party and a screenplay written by her husband, director Carl Franklin, about the last Pharaohs of the Nubian Dynasty. B’Franklin studied mass communication at UC Berkeley and credits her Berkeley days for influencing the types of movies she makes and how she makes them.
Clothilde “Cloey” Hewlett ’76, J.D. ’79

Cal Alumni Association Executive Director Clothilde “Cloey” Hewlett received her bachelor’s degree in political science from UC Berkeley in 1976 and her juris doctorate from Berkeley Law in 1979. Cloey was a partner in the national law firm Nossaman LLP and prior to that was a partner in the global law firm K&L Gates LLP. As a partner, she focused on government contracting, crisis management, major appropriations, policy analysis, and diversity. She is a specialist in public policy, was a registered state and federal lobbyist, and has served under three different governors of California. She has served as Interim Director of the State of California’s Department of General Services, Undersecretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency for the State of California, Director for Moral Character Determinations for the State Bar of California, and Special Prosecutions Investigator and Assistant District Attorney for the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. Cathryn Rivera-Hernandez J.D. ’97
Appointments Secretary, Office of Governor Gavin Newsom
Cathryn Rivera-Hernandez J.D. ’97 was appointed by Governor Newsom in June 2019 to serve as Appointments Secretary. Prior to her appointment, Rivera-Hernandez served three administrations as a board member on the Agricultural Labor Relations Board (ALRB) beginning with her appointment by Governor Gray Davis in November 2002. Prior to joining the ALRB, Rivera-Hernandez served as the Chief Deputy Cabinet Secretary for Governor Davis. As Chief Deputy, Rivera-Hernandez served as the governor’s liaison to various state agencies, departments, and boards including the Health and Human Services Agency, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Office of Emergency Services, and Department of Food and Agriculture. As a member of the cabinet office, Rivera-Hernandez was responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of administration policy and legislative initiatives within the agencies. Rivera-Hernandez also served as special legal counsel, working closely with the Legal Affairs Secretary on significant legal matters arising within the agencies and departments. Rivera-Hernandez received her bachelor’s degree in business management from Arizona State University and obtained her law degree from Berkeley Law, where she was co-editor-in-chief of the La Raza Law Journal.
Kim Baldonado ’87
Broadcast Journalist, NBCUniversal
Kim Baldonado ’87 is an Emmy–award winning broadcast journalist for NBCUniversal. She has earned six Emmy awards for her work, which includes in-depth reports on Los Angeles public schools and the rise of homelessness among women and children. Her work on the half-hour special “LAUSD: Battle for Control” earned her the prestigious National Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding achievements in journalism. Her other honors include five Golden Mike Awards and an Associated Press Mark Twain Award. A Southern California native, Baldonado grew up in San Gabriel and is known for her community work. She volunteers with students, speaking about the importance of pursuing a college degree. Baldonado serves on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles, where she is also a volunteer mentor, for which she was recognized with the Excellence in Mentoring Award. Baldonado currently lives in Los Angeles and is an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Carolyn Cool ’82, MBA
Vice President, Bank of the West
Carolyn Cool is a proud Cal graduate with a bachelor’s of science in business administration. She received her MBA from Cornell in 1985. Her career has focused on product management, marketing, and business development in the credit card and finance sectors. She is currently a vice president and community ambassador with Bank of the West, where she is a member of the Corporate Social Responsibility team. This year, she is on assignment at Working Solutions, a nonprofit that provides affordable microloans and business consulting to underserved entrepreneurs in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Owatha “Tootie” Tatum MBA ’15, Ph.D.
Founder and CEO, Blackhawk Genomics
Owatha “Tootie” Tatum is an entrepreneur and genomic scientist. She founded the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Laboratory for Molecular Diagnostics and served as Associate Professor in the Departments of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. She was instrumental in the development of Pathogenius Laboratories and has directed numerous CLIA laboratories. She has been the Director of Project Management for the Joint Genome Institute at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a massive-scale genome sequencing facility that grew out of the Human Genome Project. She holds a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences and genomics from the University of New Mexico and an MBA from Berkeley Haas.
Laura Teclemariam MBA ’18
Lead Product Manager, Electronic Arts
Laura Wright Teclemariam is a lead product manager with over a decade of hands-on experience in the product and development field. Currently, she works for Electronic Arts (EA), one of the world’s largest game publishers recognized for critically acclaimed franchises such as The Sims™, Madden NFL, and more. Prior to EA, Teclemariam led the developer tools efforts for tech startup Tapjoy. She also ran her own business for seven years, specializing in advertising and marketing. Teclemariam has also held consultant and management positions in numerous Forbes Top 100 Companies, including Deloitte Consulting and Microsoft Corporation.
She received her bachelor’s of science in electrical engineering and computer science from UC Irvine. She is in the process of acquiring an MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and a master’s in computer science from Georgia Tech. Teclemariam is a Northern California native and lives in the East Bay with her three daughters and husband.
Kellie A. McElhaney, Ph.D.
Founding Director, Berkeley Haas Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership
Dr. Kellie McElhaney is a Distinguished Teaching Fellow at UC Berkeley. In 2003, Kellie founded the Center for Responsible Business at the Haas School of Business, solidifying corporate responsibility as a core competency and competitive advantage of the school. She received the Founder and Visionary Award at Haas in 2013 for this work.
Dr. McElhaney is the author of Just Good Business: The Strategic Guide to Aligning Corporate Responsibility and Brand. She writes case studies of companies who are investing in women (Wal-Mart, E&Y, Gap, Inc.), and does research in the area of equal, pay, unconscious bias, and value-creation linkages between financial and sustainability returns when women are in leadership. Her Gap, Inc. Equal Pay case won the California Management Review Case of the Year in 2017.

Betty Yee ’79State Controller Betty T. Yee was elected in November 2014, following two terms of service on the California Board of Equalization. Now serving as the state’s chief fiscal officer, Ms. Yee also chairs the Franchise Tax Board and serves as a member of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) Boards. Ms. Yee serves on dozens of boards and commissions, ranging from land management to crime victim compensation. Ms. Yee has over 30 years of experience in public service, specializing in state and local finance and tax policy. Ms. Yee previously served as Chief Deputy Director for Budget with the California Department of Finance where she led the development of the Governor’s Budget, negotiations with the Legislature and key budget stakeholders. She also cofounded the Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project, which exposes California high school youth to the public service, public policy, and political arenas.

Sandra Bass M.A. ’91, Ph.D. ’98Sandra Bass is the director of UC Berkeley’s Public Service Center. At UC Berkeley, Ms. Bass’s doctoral research explored police behavior, community organizing, and the dynamics between police and communities of color in Oakland and Seattle. Upon completing her program, she was appointed as assistant professor of criminology and political science at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she integrated service learning into both her undergraduate and graduate courses. In 2002, Ms. Bass joined the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and in 2010 she was selected to lead the Foundation’s girls’ education, women’s leadership, and reproductive health program in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ms. Bass left the Foundation to work for the Obama campaign in the battleground states of Nevada and Colorado, and was later appointed executive director of Teach With Africa.

Tilly Chang ’92Tilly Chang serves as the executive director of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, which collaborates with public agencies and the private sector to improve transportation options for residents, commuters and visitors alike. On top of being the Congestion Management Agency and transportation sales tax administrator for San Francisco, Ms. Chang has two decades of experience, including serving previously as the SFCTA’s Deputy Director for Planning. She has also held posts with the World Bank, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and a technology startup. Ms. Chang attended M.I.T. and UC Berkeley and serves on the boards of the California Transportation Foundation, SPUR, and UC CONNECT.

Erin GoreErin S. Gore is an executive vice president and national head of the Education & Nonprofit Banking (ENB) segment of Wells Fargo Government & Institutional Banking (GIB). Ms. Gore drives strategy for the teams working with the largest universities and nonprofits nationally. Before joining Wells Fargo in 2013, Ms. Gore served as UC Berkeley’s chief financial officer. Ms. Gore has been recognized with a number of leadership awards. Most recently, the San Francisco Business Times has added her to the “Forever Influential Honor Roll Exceptional Women Leaders” in 2017. She began her career with the New York City Council Finance Division in 1996 as a budget analyst, and then spent four years with Moody’s Investor Services as a public finance analyst and committee member. Ms. Gore joined the former Banc of America Securities in 2001, rising to co-head and managing director of its public finance education and nonprofit team.

- Transitioning to a Career in Tech: A collaboration with Hackbright Academy

CAA and Hackbright Academy are working together to shine a light on how women can successfully and efficiently pivot to careers in technology. This panel spotlights women who have transitioned into the tech industry and offers interested Cal alumnae an opportunity to grow their networks while learning more about careers in software engineering.
Hackbright Academy is the Bay Area’s leading engineering school for women, and many of Hackbright’s alumnae are Cal graduates who have both non-engineering degrees and a passion for building code.
Kira Makagon ’84, MBA
Executive Vice President of Innovation, RingCentral Inc.
Kira Makagon is a successful serial entrepreneur and technology-industry leader. A graduate of UC Berkeley’s computer science department as well as the Haas School of Business, Kira enjoys sharing the lessons she’s learned from being a veteran “only woman in the room.” The only child of Ukrainian Jewish immigrant parents who believed in giving her a gender-neutral start in life, Kira landed in San Francisco as a teenager.
An avid writer and speaker, Kira is a role model for young women, encouraging them to aim for leadership roles in the technology industry. She enjoys working with entrepreneurs and currently serves as an advisor to early-stage companies including Illuminate Ventures, Yozio, Qubell, News360, 1 World Online, and Airframe, where she is also a member of the Board of Directors.
Currently Executive Vice President of Innovation at RingCentral, Kira leads product, engineering, and operations employees located across four continents. Before joining RingCentral, she co-founded several technology companies, including Octane, acquired by Epiphany, Inc.; and RedAril, acquired by Hearst. She has also participated in successful IPOs for Scopus and RingCentral. Kira currently lives in Silicon Valley and in her free time enjoys skiing, snowboarding, and taking long walks with her husband.

Meggie Mahnken ’12
Director, Software Engineering Fellowship
Meggie is the Director of the Software Engineering Fellowship at Hackbright Academy, where women learn to code in Python, build dynamic web applications, and study computer science to start careers in tech. She started coding in Python as a hobby after graduating from Cal in 2012 with a degree in Gender and Women’s Studies. In 2013, Meggie completed Hackbright’s Fellowship and began working at Hackbright as a Software Engineer on internal tools. She now spends her days overseeing the fellowship program in pursuit of Changing the Gender Ratio in tech. When not coding or hanging out in the Hackbright classroom, Meggie enjoys taking dance classes at Bay Area dance schools.
Chung Nguyen ’03
Software Engineer, Bill.com
After receiving a Bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley in English, Chung provided customer support and engagement in tech companies around the San Francisco Bay Area over the past ten years. In her last role at UserTesting, she worked closely with UX researchers, software developers, and product managers to train them on remote usability testing. Working with tech professionals at other startups and small businesses made her fall in love with the software building process and agile development, which led her to Hackbright. Chung completed Hackbright in December 2016 and then joined Bill.com in Palo Alto as a software engineer on its backend team. Aside from writing code, Chung loves making puns, petting dogs, organizing things, photographing people, and going on adventures outdoors.
Rosy Sanchez ’13

Rosy graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Social Welfare. After graduating, she landed a role in technical support which introduced her to software engineering concepts like databases, SQL, and python scripts. This exposure encouraged her to learn more, so she began going to tech meet ups, signing up for coding classes after work, and eventually attending Hackbright. After Hackbright, Rosy started her career as a software engineer at SalesforceIQ. She has taken on various roles in her new career, beginning as an internal tools engineer and moving on to becoming a build and release engineer. On top of constantly learning and developing new techniques on the job, she still attends classes to further her learning.

Kristyn leads the Pinterest Apprenticeship Program, which offers engineering opportunities to candidates from non-traditional tech backgrounds. Prior to joining Pinterest, she was on the University team at Fitbit, where she discovered her passion for developing programs that help people realize their dreams of breaking into tech. In her spare time, you can catch her running along Chrissy Field, cooking up a delicious meal, or traveling across the globe.

Jenny C. Flores ’00
Jenny Flores is the Community Affairs Manager for Bank of the West and oversees the company’s Charitable Investments and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Prior to joining Bank of the West, Jenny Flores served as the Community Development Director for Citi in Northern California. Earlier in her career, Jenny served as the Executive Director of the Congress of California Seniors, a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to assisting seniors and low-income families with issues of health care, affordable housing, transportation, technology and consumer protection. She also has extensive experience in strategic initiatives and legislative affairs through her position with the Greenlining Institute and her work in the California State Legislature. She has held numerous board positions with non-profits and currently serves on the Governing Boards of MyPath and EARN in San Francisco, CA and the Western Regional Board of Operation Hope based in Oakland, CA. Kate Scott ’05
Kate Scott is an anchor, reporter, play-by-play announcer, and host for Pac-12 Network, as well as a play-by-announcer and Emmy Award–winning reporter for CSN Bay Area and CSN California. In August 2016, Scott made history by becoming only the third woman—and first on the radio—to call an NFL game when she handled play-by-play duties for the 49ers’ first two preseason contests. Also, Scott was the first full-time female mic man in Cal history (2002 – 2005). Prior to joining Pac-12 Network, Scott spent six years as the morning sports anchor at KNBR 680 AM in San Francisco, the flagship station of the San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Stanford football. Lisen Stromberg MBA ’91
Lisen Stromberg is an award-winning journalist, sought-after speaker, and CEO and founder of PrismWork, a culture innovation consultancy. In her book, Work PAUSE Thrive: How to Pause for Parenthood Without Killing Your Career, she reveals how trailblazing women have disrupted the traditional career paradigm to achieve their personal and professional goals, and provides readers with a blueprint for how they, too, can integrate kids with their career.

Adelmise Warner serves as Lead Employment Counsel at Pandora Media, Inc. With 15 years of experience practicing labor and employment law, Adelmise has represented private companies and government entities. Prior to joining Pandora, Adelmise served as in-house employment counsel at Electronic Arts Inc. in Redwood City, California. Before Electronic Arts, Adelmise was a Senior Labor and Employment Associate at Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP in San Francisco during which she was seconded to Gap Inc. as an in-house employment counsel. Adelmise received her Juris Doctor Degree from Hastings College of the Law and her Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.
