Hundreds of Cal alumni, students, faculty, and friends turned out on Sunday, June 24, 2018 to march under UC Berkeley’s banner in the 48th annual San Francisco Pride Parade. For the second year running, the Cal Alumni Association (CAA) partnered with UC Berkeley’s Gender Equity Resource Center (GenEq) to lead the university’s contingency.
The Berkeley contingency, sporting shirts displaying the motto “Fiat Love” and waving rainbow Cal flags, cheer cards, and hand-drawn signs, was led by CAA’s blue and gold truck, which carried speakers playing dance music.
CBS local affiliate KPIX covered the parade. See the UC Berkeley group on KPIX’s Facebook live broadcast (begins at timestamp 1:23:30).
The Berkeley News Fiat Vox podcast profiled Billy Curtis, director of GenEq, who was honored as one of the 2018 SF Pride Parade’s community grand marshals.
In honor of Pride month, CAA profiled Michelle Kim ’11, a young alum and former Cal Pride scholarship recipient making advancements for diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. In her interview, Michelle emphasized the importance of joining together in community: “Community really is important. When I look back at everything I’ve accomplished, it’s all because of the people who were able to support me and stand with me in solidarity.”
The Cal Alumni Association is proud to celebrate its diverse, vibrant, and living community of more than half a million alumni worldwide.
