The Leadership Award

Established in 1934, the Leadership Award (TLA) offers a multi-year, auto-renewable scholarship. It supports visionary, innovative, and inspiring leaders who make a positive impact on their communities. Our scholars are known for their intellectual curiosity and creativity, demonstrating initiative and self-awareness.

Incoming First-Year Cal Students

Includes

First-year students beginning their first semester at UC Berkeley.

Amount

$2,500 for up to 4 years, disbursed through the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office each Spring.

Incoming Junior Transfer Students

Includes

Incoming Junior Transfer students beginning their first semester at UC Berkeley.

Amount

$2,500 for up to 2 years, disbursed through the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office each Spring.

Incoming First-Years
  • Pell Grant Eligible, California Dream Act, and AB540 students are eligible to receive the award
  • Be admitted and enroll at UC Berkeley
  • Participate in a virtual interview or in-person interview in July 2024
  • Submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to UC Berkeley by May 1, 2024
Incoming Junior Transfers
  • Pell Grant Eligible, California Dream Act, and AB540 students are eligible to receive the award
  • Be admitted to and enroll at UC Berkeley
  • Participate in a virtual interview or in-person interview in July 2024
  • Submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to UC Berkeley by June 1, 2024
Returning Students who received The Leadership Award prior to the 2024-2025 Academic Year
  • As of Match 1, 2024 eligibility to apply for The Leadership Award is restricted to incoming first-year and junior-transfer undergraduate students who are eligible to receive Pell Grants. Current Cal students who are sophomores, non-transfer juniors, and seniors are no longer eligible to apply for The Leadership Award.
  • Prior to March 1, 2024, TLA was only awarded for one academic year. The scholarship is transitioning to become auto-renewable in 2024, but this does not apply to recipients from 2023-2024 academic year.
