Cal Baseball: An Easter Story

March 28, 2013

Tonight at 7PM, at Evans Diamond, Cal baseball will take on USC in the Bears’ first-ever home game under the lights. California readers may recall that we wrote about the death of Cal baseball back in 2010, when it was announced that five varsity sports were being cut from the University’s athletics roster. A year and a half later, in our Summer 2011 issue, we reported that all five teams had been miraculously reinstated.

The lights at Evans Diamond are the latest development in what feels in some ways like the perfect Easter story–a tale of death, resurrection, and now, illumination. And indeed, the series against the Trojans wraps up on Saturday with an Easter egg hunt for the younger fans. Perhaps the talk of resurrection is laying it on a little too thick, but I think most English majors out there would agree that the religious overtones are too obvious to ignore.

Fiat Lux, goes the University’s motto.

Let there be light, said the God of Heaven and Earth. Or was it, Let there be lights? Maybe God was a baseball fan.

See you at the game.
