Art Wong ’63, a retired emergency physician, was San Francisco’s first private emergency doctor and among the pioneers who established emergency medicine as an accepted medical specialty in the US. He was a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Board, and in 2010 received the California ACEP Distinguished Service Award.

At Cal, Wong was part of the Rally Committee, and co-chaired the publicity committee for Big Game Week as a member of “Californians” (at the time, an honorary organization whose members ran activities during Big Game Week). Since graduation, he has served the university and the Cal Alumni Association (CAA) as a board member of CAA’s Chinese Chapter and a member of the executive board of the College of Letters & Science. The IDEAL Scholars Fund was the culmination of Wong’s 10 years of service on that executive board. He was part of the small group of individuals who created the scholarship for underrepresented Cal students as a response to Proposition 209. The IDEAL Scholars Fund would become a program of the Level Playing Field Institute (LPFI). Wong was the chairman of the LPFI Board, and received the LPFI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

Wong was named the YMCA of San Francisco Volunteer of the Year in 2005 and was given emeritus board designation. Most recently, he served as a trustee of the George Washington University after serving as a founding member of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences Dean’s Council. Additionally, he was on the founding board of trustees of the San Francisco Day School. Wong continues to support at-risk children as a member of the Huckleberry Youth Programs Leadership Circle.
