Curt Struble
J. Curtis (“Curt”) Struble was born and raised in Visalia, California until he escaped to the cooler shores of Berkeley for college. He was awarded B.A. degrees in Slavic Languages and Literature and in History in 1975. Curt joined the U.S. Department of State the following year as a Foreign Service Officer. His 32-year career took him to postings in Mexico, the Soviet Union, Spain, Honduras, Thailand, Ecuador and Peru. He also spent one year as a Foreign Affairs Fellow at the Hoover Institution, which is located on an obscure campus in Palo Alto.
Curt expected to spend most of his working life in Soviet/Russian affairs. While he did one assignment in Moscow and was a Deputy Director of Soviet Affairs for the last two years of Mikhail Gorbachev’s tenure, he ended up becoming more of a specialist in Latin America; this included nearly a year as the Acting Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, which managed relations with Canada, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. He capped his career serving for three and a half years as Ambassador to Peru (2004-2007). Curt’s wife Susan is also a retired Foreign Service Officer. The couple live in Chico, California and are pleased to have two world-wise adult sons near them.
