Dr. Deolinda Adao

Dr. Deolinda Adao holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures with an emphasis in Luso-Brazilian Languages and Literatures and a Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender and Sexuality from the University of California, Berkeley. For the years she was the director of Portuguese Studies Program in the Department of World Languages of California State University, San José, and instructor of Spanish and Portuguese at Berkeley City College in the Peralta Community College District, since 2007. She had directed Study Abroad Summer Programs to Cuba and Portugal for the last 20 years.
She has published five books, many literary articles, several interviews, and 4 translations (poetry and prose). She has docent two exhibits, one at the Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley and the other at the Doe Library of the same institution, where she has been the director of the Center for Portuguese Studies since 2000.
Her research interests include Gender Studies and Post-Colonial Studies, mostly in the Portuguese and Spanish speaking societies. Although she focuses on Literature, her scope is multidisciplinary in nature and cultural based. As such, she incorporates History, Sociology, Philosophy, and Political Science in her analysis of Art in general and Literature in particular aiming at identifying processes of gender and natural identity construction.
