All Tour Lecturers

Eugene Chiang (S.B. Physics MIT, 1995, PhD Astronomy Caltech, 2000) has been a Professor in the Department of Astronomy and the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at UC Berkeley since 2001. He works in theoretical astrophysics and has interests in all things planetary, from planet formation to orbital dynamics to planetary atmospheres. He served as Director of the Center for Integrative Planetary Science from 2011–15 and as Chair of Astronomy from 2015–18. From 2020–23, he created new undergraduate programs for the Physics & Astronomy departments as part of campus’s Discover initiative. Recognitions include the Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award (2014, highest award for teaching on campus), the Berkeley Noyce Prize for Undergraduate Teaching in the Physical Sciences (2019), election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2019), and a Simons Foundation Investigator award (2023).

He loves to teach because he learns so much from his students. He is excited to share the wonders of the universe—including total solar eclipses, of which Spain 2026 will be his third—with Cal alumni.
