All Tour Lecturers

Horst Rademacher retired from the Earth and Planetary Science Department at the University of California, Berkeley. There he taught graduate and undergraduate classes in Geophysics for many years, among them a very popular introductory course on Earthquakes with up to 600 students. Horst earned his science degrees from the University of Cologne (Germany). During his research career he focused on the study of earthquakes and volcanoes. His research took him to active volcanoes all over the world, among them in Alaska, Hawaii, Chile, Indonesia, Italy, the Caribbean, as well as the Canary and Capeverde Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. In addition he spent an austral summer with a geophysics research team in Antarctica.

Over time Horst realized how little the general public understood about all aspects of Earth Science and the processes which make the Earth the dynamic planet it is. This led him to share his enthusiasm for science and he began to write popular articles about Earth Science for German and American magazines. At Berkeley Seismology Lab at Cal he wrote a popular and informative blog about Earthquakes for more than ten years, “The Seismo Blog”. Horst also authored several books on Earth Science for the general audience.
